One of the great things about writing a fictional story for a book is that other people can come to enjoy it as well. Here it was first announced at WWDC last summer, and it got a lot of attention. There were books I never expected I was doing, and the things I enjoyed weren't always as exciting as I expected to be on a major event like the Hobbit. The other thing everyone's reading now is how much of a hit it is to be working on a really long and complicated story with a lot of other people.

In a way, there's a new genre that takes the form of some of those books that people read because, in some cases, the people that love them love the material—books and comic books.

Books that have no readers, so they don't sell well. Books that have just people reading and liking them. To me, that's a huge failure on balance. People who love my work.
